Title:
The Biltmore, Atlanta, Georgia
Location:
Atlanta, GA
Category:
Adaptive Reuse & Historic Restoration, Commercial
Description:
Winner of the Urban Land Institute Large Project Award and Urban Design Commission of Award of Excellence for Historic Preservation. Historic preservation/adaptive reuse-conversion of an existing landmark historic hotel to an office building with special events facilities. The modest construction budget required a simple, restrained lobby space. The understated interior enhances the drama of the adjacent ornate ballrooms. Complete ballroom restoration, including new HVAC and electrical systems, restored windows and doors, new flooring, restoration and recasting of Robert Adam style decorative plaster, and decorative painting. A new space for PGI - existing low ceilings were painted a dark color to create a sense of height. Oval round ductwork was carefully composed. Walls were treated as sculptured objects.
